The Borne district’s humble beginnings as a settlement built on the top of a medieval area for celebrations – in fact, in its heyday the Borne was where the local jousting tournament and religious processions took place -, hasn’t stopped it from growing to be one of the most fashionable places in Barcelona. The cobbled streets and ancient churches still have a medieval feel about them. Now the Borne neighbourhood is one the most up and coming areas, famed amongst the Barcelona locals for its quirky shops, chic bars and wide range of restaurants. It is one of the best places to check out tapas bars, or to have a helping of the typical Spanish paella. Sights in the Borne area are many, including the beautiful Santa Maria del Mar church, a wonderful example of the ornate architecture found in Barcelona and its myriad of pretty streets.
